Kai grew up in San Diego, California. From an early age, he developed a fascination with the seemingly inverse relationship between repairing injuries and getting old. To study this phenomenon, he received his B.S. in Bioengineering from UC Berkeley and his Ph.D. from Yale University (2012-2017) in the laboratory of Valentina Greco. He then carried out postdoctoral work in the laboratory of Dan Littman at New York University (2017-2024).
